Chapter Seventeen
Escaping the Hospitalâ¦Again
âYou can be as mad as you want.â Seth wrapped his arms around me.
âMad does not even begin to explain how I feel right now, Seth.â
âYou didnât have to come get me.â
âYouâre stuck in a kitchen drinking four-year-old water. Someone had to come save your ass and look one of those things ripped my jacket.â
âYou were bit?â He examined the shoulder of my coat.
âYes, but it didnât sink its teeth into me,â I said.
âYouâre lucky.â He held onto me again.
âNot as lucky as you,â I mumbled.
âWant to leave?â he asked.
âYeah, we have to go out the side door though, or get to it somehow.â
âWhy?â
âMegan and Liz are out there.â
âWhat?â He cocked his head to the side and arched his eyebrows. âDid you bring the whole squad with you?â
I chuckled and nodded. âTheyâre waiting in the vestibule with my new furry friend.â
âAgain, what?â
âMegan got scare scared and Liz didnât want to leave her alone. We had a rough time getting out here, so theyâre waiting in the vestibule at the side door,â I repeated.
âWhat furry friend?â he asked.
âShe found a damn kitten. She decided to keep it.â Taz shook his head at me.
âYou found a kitten?â
âYes. Itâs really cute.â
He closed his eyes and shook his head.
âWhat?â I asked.
âOnly you could leave the comforts of our fort and find a kitten.â
âYes, because a fortified city is oh so comfortable.â I rolled my eyes.
âI donât think weâre leaving here for a bit.â Taz peeked out the window.
âWhy?â
âThere are a bunch of them gathering outside the door.â
âWhy do we always get stuck here?â I asked.
âI was fine.â
âFour. Year. Old. Water.â I looked out the window at the growing crowd.
Taz was right. The once empty hall was filling up with zombies rather quickly. They pawed at the window and door trying to get in. Many of them had the odd looking green skin and swelling as a few of the others I had seen on the way up. They were acting odder than most of the undead I had run across.
âWhat is wrong with them?â I watched them lumber around. Two bumped into one another and moaned. Their heads lolled to one side and back again.
âTheyâre starving.â He climbed on a counter and pushed up on tiles.
âStarving?â Taz questioned.
âHow often do you think people are crazy enough to wander into ground zero?â He arched his eyebrows at me.
âI suppose there arenât many psychotic doctors on suicide missions,â I said. âWhat are you doing?â
âSeeing if we can get out of here.â
âIâm not going back into any ceilings. Iâm sick of this place and ceilings.â
âHow else do you plan on getting out?â he asked, pushing on of the tiles to the side.
I sighed heavily and dropped my head. âFine.â
He pulled himself up into the darkness and crawled along the way toward the end of the unit.
âDonât go all the way down.â
âWhy?â
âAbout half way, turn to the right.â
âWhy?â
âWeâll be at the stairwell. It was pretty deserted when I came up,â I told him.
âAre you sure?â
âPositive.â
âI donât know,â he protested.
